    do you need fertilizer for the plants to grow? i already have a stocked 20 gallon tank and i want to set it up like a proper planted tank. i tend to just pick any plant. but ive ordered a collection for my tank size. but do i need to put fertilizer in.

    What good Nitrate Removers are there? I don't want an algae problem. I can't find Tetra Nitrate Minus anywhere in the US...

    you don't need a substrate heater, a normal heater for the aquarium is all you need.

    Don't need co2 or air bubbler. Should have a bio wheel to bring co2 from the air. Don't have many fish in a planted tank or you will have lots of algae. Some plants will do well with a 2 fluorescent light hood but modifying it to 4 or more light is recommended. Grow lights also help

    If algae is green then the water is healthy if brown then you are not following these directions. You can put peat moss in a stocking and place it in the filter where it wont interfere and this will also aid in the plant and fish health. Remember, no chemicals, salt etc. Use a scotchbrite that is free of soap or residue to clean the glass. You dont need to spend a lot.

    High concentrations of minerals and nitrates are very harmful. You dont ever need to remove the plants. For a planted tank, dont use carbon or carbon based filter pad or any other chemicals etc. Not the white ammonia zorb or medicines etc. If the fish get sick, take them out of the tank to a hospital tank until well. Your fish wont get sick if the environment is healthy.

    Change 15 percent of the water each month and put a little chlorine remover in the water before entering it into the tank or immediately after because chlorine is harmful to the entire ecosystem in the tank. You must change water. You will kill everything if you dont. Water evaporates but minerals and waste dont. The minerals will build up as you keep topping off the water and you will see this because the top dry glass will form a mineral white film.

    A substrate heater, isn't necessary, just have a normal one. Don't use tetra substrate use Tropica much better.

    Liddlefishdoctor I just have one question. If I have fish, how will I clean the gravel. I use a siphon for my other tanks, but wouldn't that stir up the base layer of "completesubstrate"???
