Platy Fish giving birth- UP CLOSE- 14 births caught on camera

Platy giving birth amazingly up close footage! This is Rosie she is a Platy and this is her first lot of babies. Platy are livebearers, which means unlike most fish they dont lay eggs, they give birth to live young called fry. To see some of the babies just after they where born follow the link: www.youtube.com HELP ME NAME THEM LEAVE NAME SUGGESTIONS IN COMMENT BOX She is in a breeding trap to prevent her from eating her young as Platys have no maternal instincts... however does not always work and Rosie ended up eating a far few of hers. WARNING: some of my fish where clever enough to work out that when the babies tale fins got near the gaps of the breeding trap, they could nibble on them and even pull them through. If possible try and put the babies into there own tank to prevent this from happening. I sadly lost 4 because of this. To see a Platy mating dance and Platy's mating follow the link: www.youtube.com

  1. The patch near the anal fin becomes darker. Her back will become more arched and her belly will become a sort of squared shape. I would reckonmend buying a breeding trap or she will eat them. If you see any babies, keep an eye on them as they have a habit of swimming back up the breeding trap and getting eaten. I usually use 2 traps. I take the babies out of the mothers one and put them in the other. Hope this helps, always willing to try and help

  3. Really neat! I tried to take a video of my panda platy giving birth to swordtail fry but she wouldn't stay still. She didn't like her breeding box at all. I ended up letting her swim freely in the tank and netted out some fry later on. I've got about six. I hope she has another batch soon! I really want to see what they'll look like when they're older. The male died about a month ago so I hope he left the female set for a few births.

  11. Sorry i could not go to the store because my mom and dad were at the hospital and i am not old enough to drive but i will still try to find out the name for the fish. Oh and thank you for responding to my comments now i know that my platy is pregnant but is not ready to give birth yet. Thanks

  12. they can sometimes stop when moved or feel stressed, or she may have had more and still managed to eat them. The problem with breeding traps is the weaker ones are the ones that tend to not get eaten because they are less active and don't swim back up to where the mother is.

  13. Sorry I have one more question i forgot to ask this earlier. So my guppy just gave birth to 2 babies one got eaten :( but then when i put her in the breeding thing that you use she stopped having babies and she still has that gravid stop near her bum any idea why she stopped? And thanks that really helped me out :)

  14. Would be great thanks. I know the breed is Platys, but not the name of her colouring. There are a couple of things to look for. There is a patch near the anal fin that becomes darker, also her stomach becomes more square shaped (may sound odd but you will get what i mean when you see it.) There tail lowers and their back arches. Try and look for some photos and diagrams on google they can be really helpful. Hope this helps :)

  15. No... Sorry i will check the name of them the next time i go to that store if you want me to. I am going to go the first Wednesday of April to get some guppies and how can you tell if these fish are pregnant or in labor?

  19. Possiably, i wouldnt leave her in the breeding trap for too long as it can stress them out. There are a couple of things to look out for. In lighter coloured fish you can sometimes see the babies eyes. When they are ready to give birth the stomach becomes a square-ish shape, this sounds odd but you will understand it when you see it (take another look at this video to see what i mean) there tail fin tends to lower and a darker patch will appear/get darker by anal fin.
